Brief guide to Bingo

CHAMPAGNE corks will be popping this Christmas for members of a Sheffield bingo sites club after they scooped a jackpot of more than £330,000.
The atmosphere was electric at Wadsley Bridge Gala Bingo when a Stannington woman's numbers came up - resulting in two massive wins for her and the other 110 players by play live bingo games.
The 45-year-old had played a new bingo game called High 5 – where players claim 50 per cent of the rollover jackpot if 'house' is called on number five, with the remaining half being shared between the other players.
It meant she walked away with a whopping £174,367!
And it also left £165,352.82 to be shared out - giving everyone a lump sum of more than £1,500 to take home as an early Christmas present.
The woman, who doesn't want to be named, said: "It's a wonderful feeling!
"The club was in uproar. Everyone was thanking me and there were some lovely personal stories. A lady came up to me and said: 'You've really made my Christmas' - that just says it all. I'm still in shock."
Russell Coggan, deputy manager at Gala Bingo, added: "It was amazing!
"Everyone was really charged up. 110 customers in the local area picked up £1,503 just before Christmas and, especially with times being what they are, it really means something to people."

Bingo hits jackpot for six charities
The cry of "Bingo!" in Long Sutton has helped raise £6,500 for good causes.
Sutton Bridge and Long Sutton fundraisers hold popular bingo sessions each Thursday and Saturday evening at Long Sutton Church Hall, the proceeds from which are given to various organisations at the end of the year.
Cheques for £1,000 were given to Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance; St Mary's Church in Long Sutton; Long Sutton and Sutton Bridge Medical Centre; the Pilgrim Hospital in Boston; and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King's Lynn.
The Friends of North Cambridgeshire Hospital was given £500.
A number of people help organise the regular sessions to play bingo, whether by fetching prizes or driving bingo players to and from sessions.
But the main driving force behind fundraising is Hazel Phillippo, who has been running the bingo evenings for a number of years.
She said: "The bingo sessions give many people a night out and a chance to meet friends and acquaintances. The fact that we can raise money and give good donations to excellent organisations is an added bonus."
Sutton Bridge councillor Chris Brewis said: "Many people do a bit to keep the bingos running but without Hazel the whole thing would come to a full stop."

But the main driving force behind fundraising is Hazel Phillippo, who has been running the bingo evenings for a number of years.
She said: "The bingo sessions give many people a night out and a chance to meet friends and acquaintances. The fact that we can raise money and give good donations to excellent organisations is an added bonus."
Sutton Bridge councillor Chris Brewis said: "Many people do a bit to keep the bingos running but without Hazel the whole thing would come to a full stop."

Gala Bingo go on Environmental Initiative
Gala Bingo are already on a huge charity drive at the moment for their choosen charity Sue Ryder Care and they have just teamed up with them and Southern Electric to go on a big Green Environmental Initiative which is aimed at helping consumers save energy, money and CO2 emissions. A road show is currently sweeping the UK bingo sites and a lorry with a big Gala Bingo sign, a huge energy saving light bulb and the caption “Save Energy, Save Money” recently drove past the Houses of Parliament in London and it may be coming to a town near you soon.
This latest energy saving campaign was the brain child of the “Complete Media Company” and it will see both Gala Bingo clubs and Sue Ryder care shops throughout the UK give away more than 3 million energy saving light bulbs to play live bingo games. It has been estimated that if all these light bulbs are fitted in people’s homes that it could save a massive £11 million pounds collectively of their energy bills, which in return would also save 39,200 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year, now that is certainly food for thought.
Southern Electric energy efficiency manager Steven Millward, said, "Even though people may think it's almost too small to make an impact, it is an important step in the right direction; and if everyone who collects a free pack of bulbs installs them, the resulting total impact will certainly be significant."
The energy saving road show that has a 16ft replica energy saving light bulb on the back of one of their lorries and a Gala Bingo Placard saying “Switch me on”, is due to hit Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, Sheffield, Nottingham, Bristol, Brighton, Newcastle and their surrounding areas over the coming weeks. Going environmentally green, certainly seems to be the order of the day at Gala Bingo and the Gala Coral group, as well as helping to raise funds for the Sue Ryder Care charity as they go. All publicity is good publicity where both these initiatives are concerned and Gala Bingo are definitely helping to provide the platform to get both these drives out in the public eye.
